According to the Commission, the Fijian Constitution guarantees freedoms such as opinion, expression, peaceful assembly, and association, which are crucial for civic engagement, accountability, and national progression. However, it also cautions that these rights should be exercised responsibly to ensure they are not misused to spread hate, harassment, or incite violence.
This statement follows a series of troubling incidents after Human Rights Day 2025, where activists and human rights defenders experienced targeted online harassment. The Commission strongly condemns these acts, asserting they violate individual rights, undermine human dignity, and disrupt social cohesion. It resolutely denounces all forms of intimidation and hostility, emphasizing that every human rights defender—particularly women—deserves to perform their work in safety, free from threats both online and offline.
Additionally, the Commission urges the government, Members of Parliament, institutions, and community members to bolster support for human rights defenders. It calls for the promotion of respectful dialogue and accountability for those who infringe on the rights of others. While acknowledging that diverse opinions are inherent in society, the Commission insists that hate speech and aggression have no place in Fiji.
