Fiji Urges Global Upholding of Humanitarian Norms and Climate Justice at IPU Assembly

Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko has emphasized the necessity for global leaders to enhance humanitarian efforts and adhere to international humanitarian norms, during his address at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. Reflecting on the theme, “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis,” Jitoko advocated for collaborative and inclusive approaches in responding to global emergencies.

In his speech, he recognized the recent peace in Gaza and Palestine, expressing optimism that this ceasefire could serve as a foundation for broader reconciliation efforts across the globe. He underscored the particular vulnerabilities faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, where the climate crisis manifests as an immediate and pressing reality rather than a distant concern. Jitoko pointed out that Fiji is grappling with intensified cyclones, rising sea levels, and the displacement of communities—issues that strain national resources and test resilience.

Jitoko highlighted Fiji’s leadership role in advancing humanitarian and climate action, referencing significant legislative measures such as the Climate Change Act of 2021 and the Environmental Levy Act of 2017. Additionally, he spoke about initiatives like the Pacific Ocean as an ‘Ocean of Peace,’ recently affirmed by Pacific leaders, further showcasing Fiji’s commitment to fostering a stable climate.

Moreover, he stressed Fiji’s dedication to transparency, democracy, and climate justice, emphasizing that emergency powers must always respect human rights. “Let this Assembly lead to bold, coordinated action, where dialogue culminates in decisive progress,” he concluded.

Jitoko’s remarks resonate with previous discussions at the Sixth World Conference of Speakers, where he and other leaders recognized the dire nature of climate emergencies and humanitarian disasters. His message echoes a call for collective action, reinforcing the importance of solidarity in addressing these pressing global challenges. Through such cooperation, there is hope for creating a more resilient future, particularly for vulnerable communities who face the brunt of these crises.
