Women’s empowerment transcends mere slogans; it involves fortifying families, safeguarding rights, and engaging in tangible actions every day. This message was powerfully delivered by Fijian Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, at an International Women’s Day event held at Tanoa Hotel in Suva.
During his speech, Singh underscored the everyday contributions and sacrifices made by Fijian women, highlighting the dedication of mothers who rise before dawn to tend to their families and working women who adeptly balance job responsibilities with childcare and the care of extended family members. He emphasized the importance of recognizing that International Women’s Day should be celebrated daily, stating, “Women must be appreciated every day for all they do for the family.”
Singh acknowledged the often invisible labor that women contribute, noting that many families thrive because of the quiet yet significant efforts of women who work tirelessly behind the scenes. He asserted that the concept of empowerment must go beyond rhetoric, emphasizing women’s fundamental rights to safe and decent working conditions, equal pay, protection from harassment, maternity leave, and equitable business opportunities.
The Minister announced that labor laws are being fortified to enhance workplace protections, particularly through reforms aimed at preventing harassment and discrimination. He urged compliance with these laws to ensure a safe work environment, stating, “If you are complying, there is no reason to worry. Make sure you observe the minimum standards.”
Additionally, Singh recognized the importance of returning women workers from overseas labor mobility programs, asserting that their skills, confidence, and accumulated savings must lead to sustained opportunities through support for reintegration, pathways to entrepreneurship, and access to training.
Adding to Singh’s sentiments, Australian Deputy High Commissioner Clair McNamara reiterated that women are the backbone of families and communities. She highlighted how labor mobility has empowered many women to gain skills, establish businesses, support their children’s education, and uplift entire households.
