Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, recently inaugurated the Women in Construction and Trade Fiji (WICAT) website, emphasizing the crucial role women play in transforming traditionally male-dominated industries. The launch took place during Women in Construction Week 2026, gathering industry leaders, development partners, and the women who are vital to the progress in Fiji’s construction and trade sectors.

Minister Kiran commended WICAT for its evolution since its inception in 2021, recognizing its stature as a national movement dedicated to empowering women in trades. She highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by women in these sectors but underscored their resilience and the collective strength they bring to the workforce. “When women participate in construction and infrastructure, the entire nation benefits,” Kiran stated.

WICAT founder Julianne Verma described the website launch as a significant step forward, representing the perseverance and determination of women in the industry. She stressed the organization’s focus on empowerment and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of working together with male allies to advance the sector. “Being a woman in the construction and trade industry is not easy. Yet across this sector, one theme unites us: we are strong,” Verma remarked.

Highlighting the impact of mentorship, 22-year-old Cecilia Sumasafu, the youngest member of WICAT, shared her journey from feeling marginalized as a female architecture student to securing an internship at ATELIER 153. She attributed her success to WICAT’s support, encouraging others to pursue their passions in the field.

The newly launched website is designed to elevate the visibility of women in construction and trade, enhance networking and mentorship opportunities, and provide a platform for national and regional recognition. As Women in Construction Week 2026 progresses, WICAT exemplifies the growing influence of women who are actively shaping Fiji’s future in construction and trade.
