Fiji Unveils Updated Diabetes Guidelines, Trains Health Workers Nationwide

Doctors and nurses at Korovou Hospital in Tailevu have recently participated in training focused on Fiji’s revised national diabetes guidelines, aimed at improving diabetes care across the nation. This training is part of a broader initiative following the national launch of updated guidelines and a comprehensive Training of Trainers program established in all divisions, ensuring that healthcare workers throughout Fiji have access to standardized and current clinical information.

The new guidelines highlight the importance of making lifestyle modifications, such as adopting healthy eating habits, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing weight effectively. They recommend a balanced diet that includes an abundance of fruits and vegetables while advising the reduction of salt, sugar, and fats. The guidelines also suggest integrating low-Glycemic Index foods into daily meals.

In addition to dietary recommendations, the Ministry of Health emphasizes the need to avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Regular follow-ups, adherence to medication, and routine check-ups are highlighted as crucial for preventing complications and promoting long-term health among individuals living with diabetes.
