New road traffic regulations took effect on January 22, 2026, following the official release of the Land Transport (Fees and Penalties) (Amendment) Regulations 2026. These laws, established under the Land Transport Act 1998 and developed in consultation with the Land Transport Authority, bring substantial changes to fines, demerit points, and suspension penalties concerning various traffic violations.
A key highlight of the amendments is the introduction of penalties for failing to stop and weigh vehicles. A first offense now incurs a $300 fine along with one demerit point. Should a driver commit a second offense, the fine increases to $600 and two demerit points, while a third offense results in a $900 fine and three demerit points, in addition to possible higher maximum penalties.
The regulations also revamp the penalties for illegal parking or stopping. Offenders will face a fixed penalty of $100 and obtain one demerit point for these violations, with the possibility of supplementary fines or suspension penalties for more serious infractions.
Speeding penalties have been restructured as well. Those caught exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 km/h will be fined $50 and receive one demerit point. A fine of $75 and two demerit points will be imposed for speeding between 15–29 km/h over the limit, while exceeding the speed limit by 30 km/h or more will carry a $100 fine and three demerit points. Additionally, all speeding offenses may lead to enhanced penalties, including the potential suspension of driving licenses.
The amendments received formal approval from Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport. Authorities are urging drivers to familiarize themselves with the new penalties, which are aimed at boosting road safety, ensuring better compliance, and reducing dangerous driving behaviors across Fiji. These enhanced measures signify a proactive approach to fostering safer roads for all users, showcasing a commitment to public safety and responsible driving practices.
