Rural communities in Fiji are facing critical challenges related to water supply and sanitation, as highlighted by Nicholas Pilgrim, the Lead Consultant for the Fiji Rural Water and Sanitation Master Plan. He noted that over a thousand villages, especially in the outer islands, lack reliable water and sanitation services. To address this pressing issue, collecting baseline data to effectively target these underserved areas has become essential.
The initiative aims to tackle the needs of these communities through a structured plan, including division-based programs designed to promote sustainable water and sanitation services. Pilgrim explained that while 1,600 villages have been identified, only 463 are integrated into the Water Authority of Fiji’s urban water supply systems, leaving more than a thousand villages reliant on rural programs.
There is a growing concern about the disproportionate focus on urban centers at the expense of remote settlements. Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau reaffirmed the government’s commitment to finding solutions through collaboration with stakeholders and strategic planning. He outlined that regulatory and legal draft changes are in progress, and the ministry will focus on implementation preparations.
The Fiji Rural Water and Sanitation Master Plan represents a concerted effort to expand sustainable water and sanitation services to all villages, with a particular emphasis on remote and outer island communities. This initiative aligns with Fiji’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for everyone by 2030.
Past efforts, such as the Vusama Water Project—which successfully improved water access for two villages—demonstrate the government’s dedication to enhancing public health through better water services. With targeted investments and a comprehensive strategy, the project aims to improve the quality of life in rural areas and create a sustainable water supply system throughout the nation.
