The recently introduced Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan in Fiji aims to ensure that every community has access to safe and reliable drinking water. Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced the launch at an event held at the Holiday Inn in Suva, emphasizing the plan’s importance in addressing public health and promoting sustainable rural development.
Minister Tuisawau stated that the initiative would delineate investment priorities, establish institutional roles, and explore financing options. He stressed that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right vital for health and well-being. The plan, developed through extensive consultations and collaborations with governmental agencies, civil society, and international partners, marks a significant achievement in the government’s commitment to achieving universal access to water and sanitation services.
The master plan will be implemented in two phases. The first phase from 2025 to 2030 will focus on achieving universal physical coverage, employing sustainable and climate-resilient systems. Phase two, slated for 2031 to 2050, will enhance long-term service delivery through improved planning and innovative approaches. This comprehensive strategy aligns with various national policies, including the National Development Plan, Water and Sewerage Services Bill, and the Water Sector Strategy 2050.
Minister Tuisawau’s comments about the collective effort towards this plan resonate with earlier initiatives, such as the successful Vusama Water Project, which improved access to clean water for two villages. These developments reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle water supply and sanitation challenges.
