Fiji’s Plan to Relocate Evicted Families Sparks Housing Hope

Fiji Unveils Relocation Plan and Housing Grants for Eviction-Affected Families

The Fijian government is diligently working on relocation strategies for families living in the Fiji Muslim League Settlement in Nabua, Suva. This initiative, led by the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, aims to ensure a seamless transition for these residents who have been issued eviction notices. The focus is on developing sustainable relocation solutions that offer access to essential services, security, and proximity to employment and education opportunities.

Minister Nalumisa has indicated that a comprehensive relocation plan is being developed and will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. Central to this plan is the identification of a potential relocation site near Koronivia, Nausori, where preliminary work on essential infrastructure such as roads, drainage, and utilities has begun.

To guarantee the security and welfare of the families being relocated, the government is collaborating with the iTaukei Lands Trust Board and the Ministry of Lands to finalize the necessary legal agreements. Additionally, the government is formulating a first-home grant assistance package for those facing eviction, complementing existing Housing Authority grants. A budget allocation of $2.2 million has been made to support these initiatives.

This relocation strategy extends beyond the residents of the Fiji Muslim League Settlement. It also aims to benefit squatters from other informal settlements in the Suva region, offering plots to low to middle-income families. The government’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity Fiji via the Greenfield project highlights a comprehensive commitment to support families facing eviction notices.

This initiative underscores the Fijian government’s compassionate and holistic approach to tackling housing challenges. By prioritizing the needs of affected families and working collaboratively with various stakeholders, the government aims for a solution that ensures community stability and welfare. The proactive measures being undertaken reflect a broader dedication to reducing housing instability and facilitating peaceful transitions for residents in need.
