The Fijian government is embarking on a robust initiative to enhance public safety through substantial investments in the Fiji Police Force and modernizing policing infrastructure. During the inauguration of the newly constructed $36 million Nakasi Police Station, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad underscored that safety is crucial for both national progress and economic development.
A total budget of $240 million has been allocated to the Police, with plans to recruit an additional 1,000 officers. This recruitment is aimed at strengthening community policing initiatives and addressing a concerning 26% rise in crime rates in recent months. Prasad affirmed the government’s dedication to tackling critical issues such as drug abuse, human trafficking, and cybercrime, through enhanced resources, more stringent legislation, and international partnerships.
“Without safety and security, there can be no sustainable development, investment, or improvement in the quality of life for our people,” Prasad stated. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Fiji Police Force in rebuilding public trust and assured the commitment to provide them with the necessary tools and infrastructure to elevate community safety.
This recent increase in the police budget aligns with previous remarks made by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, who emphasized that safety and security are fundamental for national advancement. Naivalurua had previously flagged the escalating drug crisis as a national emergency that calls for strategic and comprehensive interventions.
The inauguration of the Nakasi Police Station is significant not only for serving a community of over 45,000 residents but also for illustrating the government’s broader commitment to modernizing the Fiji Police Force.
