Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya recently attended Fiji’s inaugural Justice Summit 2025 in Nadi, marking a significant milestone aimed at enhancing the justice system in the country. The event was designed to bring together influential leaders, government officials, judiciary members, civil society, and international partners to collaborate on creating a fairer and more people-centered justice framework.
During her address, Tabuya commended the Ministry of Justice for leading an inclusive reform initiative. She emphasized that “true justice is not only found in the courtroom, but in how we communicate, listen, and ensure every Fijian is treated with dignity and respect.” This highlights the importance of community input in reforming the justice system, a crucial aspect of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and effectiveness within Fiji’s judiciary.
The summit also featured a significant keynote address from Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, who introduced key documents, including the Final Report on the Functional Status of Fiji’s Law and Justice Sector and the 2025–2029 Reform Roadmap. These reports outline the next steps for reform, aimed at addressing systemic issues and enhancing public confidence in the rule of law. The significance of the summit was further underscored by the official launch of these documents by His Excellency Acting President and Chief Justice Salesi Temo.
Tabuya expressed gratitude for the collaborative atmosphere present at the summit, acknowledging the contributions of various partners, including Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Judiciary, the Fiji Law Society, and numerous civil and faith-based organizations. She stated, “The progress we make in justice reform depends not only on legal frameworks but also on how we communicate those reforms to the people. Transparency, dialogue, and trust are essential.”
This inaugural summit represents a crucial advance in Fiji’s pursuit of a more accountable and transparent legal system. The recent Cabinet endorsement of the Functional Review demonstrates a collective commitment to improving the justice sector. Stakeholders are united in their vision for a justice system that is accessible and equitable, ultimately paving the way for a future grounded in trust and community involvement.
