World Food Day Sparks Fiji's Community-Driven Food Security Push

Fiji Unveils Nutrition Policy on World Food Day

In the Deuba District, students and villagers joined forces to observe World Food Day, with notable contributions from various government and non-government organizations. This year’s celebration held special significance as it marked the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna attended the event to officially present Fiji’s Food and Nutrition Security Policy to the Ministry of Health. During his address, he underscored the necessity of nurturing healthy eating habits, particularly in the context of increasing concerns regarding non-communicable diseases (NCDs) affecting the population. Minister Tunabuna encouraged communities to optimize their land for agricultural use, which would not only improve food security but also generate financial benefits.

The Minister highlighted ongoing collaborations with various stakeholders aimed at reversing the trend of declining agricultural productivity and promoting healthier dietary options among citizens. He expressed his gratitude to the FAO for its ongoing support in crafting key policies that advance the country’s agricultural landscape.

Joann Young, the Assistant FAO Representative to Fiji, affirmed the organization’s dedication to aiding Fiji in boosting productivity and market access, along with an emphasis on policy development. Villagers showed appreciation for the government’s initiative to host such events in their communities, illustrating the vital role of grassroots engagement in tackling food security and nutrition issues.

The gathering underscores Fiji’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices. It aligns with national objectives to enhance local food production, reduce reliance on imports, and ultimately foster a healthier and more resilient population. These initiatives not only aim to tackle the rising incidents of NCDs but also positively impact the economy by strengthening local agriculture, reflecting a hopeful agenda for the future of food security in Fiji.
