Fiji is making significant strides in its climate action initiatives, highlighted by the recent announcement from Environment and Climate Change Minister Mosese Bulitavu regarding the submission of the nation’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC3.0) in Parliament. This key milestone, recorded on November 6, 2025, represents Fiji’s most ambitious and scientifically backed pledge to combat climate change to date.
NDC3.0 supersedes the previous commitments under the Paris Agreement and is in line with the Climate Change Act, reinforcing Fiji’s leadership role among small island states which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. A crucial aspect of this new commitment is the target of a 36 percent reduction in emissions from the energy sector by 2035. This goal will be pursued through a combination of domestic initiatives and international support, with 12 percent of the reduction expected from local efforts and the remaining 24 percent dependent on external funding.
Moreover, NDC3.0 outlines specific strategies for mitigation in agriculture and waste management, highlighting the introduction of biogas systems for farmers aimed at curtailing emissions, along with innovative measures to address methane emissions from landfills and wastewater processes.
Fiji has also established a national framework to address loss and damage from climate impacts, particularly focusing on assistance for coastal communities, agricultural sectors, and vulnerable households. The adaptation strategies included in NDC3.0 are centered around ensuring food security, safeguarding infrastructure, preserving water resources, enhancing public health, and protecting marine ecosystems that face growing pressures. The government’s proactive stance in these areas reflects a commitment to building resilience in light of current challenges.
Minister Bulitavu further noted that a Costed Implementation Plan is forthcoming, which will outline the funding and climate finance required to meet the obligations established in NDC3.0. He asserted that this plan goes beyond a mere policy statement; it embodies Fiji’s determination to protect its people and environment from the worsening climate crisis. This comprehensive approach illustrates the nation’s dedication to nurturing a sustainable future, emphasizing a belief that concerted climate action can yield positive outcomes for both Fiji and the global community.
