A new chapter in recycling is set to begin in Fiji as Return and Earn Fiji, a not-for-profit organization, has unveiled plans for a nationwide launch of its community-based, industry-supported beverage container collection system by mid-next year. This program seeks to streamline the recycling efforts of eight significant beverage companies into one cohesive system, simplifying the process for Fijians to return PET bottles and aluminum cans for recycling.
Participants in the program will receive five cents for each container returned, regardless of the brand. According to spokesperson Dwain Qalovaki, the initiative is poised to establish a minimum of 50 buy-back collection points across Fiji, collaborating with communities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to facilitate this effort.
The collected recyclables will be sent to processing facilities on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu before being shipped to certified recyclers abroad. “The system is designed to reward responsible waste management while providing an accessible and transparent way for the public to recycle,” explained Mr. Qalovaki. To ensure accountability, reports will be made available regularly, detailing the quantities collected and the environmental benefits derived from the program.
The initiative is backed by eight key members of the beverage industry, including notable companies such as Carpenters (Fiji) Pte Ltd, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (Fiji) Ltd, and Motibhai and Company Ltd. Membership remains open to other beverage distributors looking to contribute to a cleaner and greener Fiji.
This ambitious project aligns with previous recycling advancements within the country, notably the efforts of organizations like Mission Pacific, which has been instrumental in Fiji’s recycling landscape since 1999. Their initiatives include cash refunds for containers and the establishment of collection points to foster accessibility for locals. Together, these efforts illustrate a growing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability in Fiji.
In light of these developments, there is a promising outlook for increased community engagement and the establishment of more efficient waste management practices nationwide. By fostering collaboration among industry members and local communities, Fiji is paving the way for significant positive change in recycling and sustainability efforts throughout the Pacific region.
