Fiji Unveils Stamp Honoring the Nanai Cicada and Cultural Biodiversity

Fiji Unveils Nanai Cicada Stamp for 25th Emergence

Post Fiji has introduced a special commemorative stamp dedicated to Fiji’s unique periodical cicada, the ‘Nanai’ (Raiateana knowlesi), in celebration of the 25th emergence cycle of this remarkable insect. The launch, held in Suva, underscores the Nanai’s significant cultural and ecological contributions within Fiji.

The Nanai, distinctively recognized as the only known periodical cicada in the Southern Hemisphere, is native to specific regions of Fiji including Namosi, Naitasiri, and Serua. Radhika Karunaratne, Deputy Chair of Post Fiji, highlighted the stamp’s purpose beyond philately, emphasizing its role in conservation and cultural storytelling. She noted that stamps serve not only as collectibles but also as symbols of national identity and cultural heritage. By featuring the Nanai on a stamp, Post Fiji aims to enhance recognition and appreciation among Fijians, particularly younger generations, of their country’s unique biodiversity.

Dr. Dick Watling, Founding Trustee of NatureFiji–MareqetiViti, emphasized the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge into scientific exploration. He expressed admiration for the local communities’ longstanding understanding of the Nanai’s eight-year life cycle, noting the significance of this emergence as the sixth since he first became aware of it in the 1980s.

Available at Post Fiji outlets, the commemorative stamps showcase artistic depictions of the Nanai, demonstrating an integration of biodiversity and traditional knowledge. Such initiatives are pivotal in conservation endeavors, fostering a collective responsibility toward safeguarding Fiji’s natural heritage. This effort contributes to the vibrancy of local culture and promotes a hopeful vision of environmental sustainability and Fijian identity.
