Sun-Powered Upgrade Transforms Healthcare at Fiji's Lomaloma Hospital

Fiji Unveils Largest Solar Install in Healthcare at Lomaloma Hospital

Residents of Vanuabalavu can now rely on a consistent electricity supply thanks to the recent installation of a solar energy system at the Lomaloma Subdivisional Hospital. This significant change ends years of dependence on unreliable generators and frequent power outages. Funded by Cure Kids Fiji in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS), this initiative marks the largest solar energy installation in a healthcare facility in Fiji’s history.

The project began with an initial scoping process involving CBS Power Solutions and the MOHMS Biomedical team, culminating in a comprehensive assessment completed in June and the implementation taking place in the following weeks. The newly established solar system ensures a steady electricity supply, which greatly enhances healthcare services not only at Lomaloma Hospital but also for neighboring nursing stations and health centers across the island.

Dr. Krishan Prasad, Acting Subdivisional Medical Officer of Lomaloma, voiced his optimism about the upgrade’s benefits for patient care, noting that it would lessen the reliance on oxygen cylinders by allowing for the more efficient use of oxygen concentrator machines. Furthermore, the move toward solar energy reduces carbon emissions previously generated by diesel-powered generators.

Dr. Prasad expressed heartfelt appreciation to Cure Kids Fiji, MOHMS, and the CBS Power Solutions team for designating Lomaloma as the first Subdivisional Hospital in Fiji to receive solar energy, describing this development as a transformative step for healthcare in the Lau Group.

The emphasis on renewable energy continues throughout the nation with similar projects, like the solar home system initiative aimed at providing renewable energy solutions to over 900 households, benefitting remote areas such as Lau, Kadavu, and Malolo. This comprehensive strategy reflects a strong commitment to sustainable development, ensuring improved living standards and access to essential services for even the most isolated communities.

The successful implementation at Lomaloma Hospital serves as a symbol of hope for a sustainable and empowered future for all Fijians. It illuminates the path toward clean, reliable energy through innovative collaborations, setting the stage for further advancements in healthcare, education, and overall quality of life. As more solar projects emerge, they signify a hopeful chapter in Fiji’s dedication to sustainable development and optimum living conditions for its citizens.
