In the past five years, Fiji has reported an alarming 10,111 cases of child abuse and neglect, with around 60 to 70 percent of these incidents involving neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse. This troubling statistic not only highlights the vulnerability of children but also emphasizes the urgent need for community action. As the country marks the International Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day, the Fijian government is intensifying its efforts to protect its young population.
Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has voiced her concerns regarding these increasing figures, which signify a dire situation demanding immediate intervention. In response, Fiji’s government has enacted two critical pieces of legislation this year: the Child Safety and Protection Act and the Child Justice Act. These laws are aimed at bolstering child protection initiatives and establishing a framework that prioritizes the needs and rights of children throughout the nation.
The Child Safety and Protection Act outlines specific measures and responsibilities for preventing and addressing abuse and neglect, ensuring that children’s welfare remains central in all actions taken. Meanwhile, the Child Justice Act focuses on providing a supportive legal framework for minors in conflict with the law, prioritizing rehabilitation and protection over punishment, thereby fostering dignity for young offenders.
Kiran stresses that every child is entitled to a safe, nurturing environment devoid of violence and exploitation. She advocates for involving children as active partners in shaping their future, urging that their perspectives be incorporated into policies and decisions that affect their lives.
In addition, the Department of Children is taking proactive steps by establishing child-friendly spaces such as frangipani treehouses in community areas and workplaces. These initiatives aim to promote emotional development and create secure environments for learning, representing a meaningful investment in the future of Fiji’s youth.
The Minister calls for a collective effort among all community members—parents, educators, caregivers, and leaders—to unite under this year’s theme: “Nurturing Minds, Protecting Futures.” This collaboration is vital for reducing violence and fostering a supportive atmosphere for the well-being of children, which is crucial in building a safer Fiji.
