Fiji’s Parliament has made significant progress in protecting its marine resources by passing the Fisheries Amendment Bill. This new legislation enhances the authority of the Ministry for Fisheries, enabling rapid enforcement actions against illegal fishing practices. Importantly, the Ministry can now suspend or cancel fishing licenses for specific violations without waiting for court convictions, marking a substantial shift from the outdated 80-year-old law it replaces.
Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu emphasized that the primary aim of the Bill is to secure food resources and livelihoods for over 850 coastal communities that depend heavily on fishing. “The Bill’s purpose is to stop unsustainable harvesting practices and exploitation, thus protecting resources for local communities and their essential food sources,” she stated. The legislation not only imposes stricter penalties but also broadens the scope of enforcement officers’ authority. Officers are now empowered to investigate and inspect land premises such as markets and processing factories, extending their reach beyond just maritime areas.
Despite these advancements, Opposition Leader Inia Seuiratu voiced concerns about the need for greater consultation with traditional fishing rights and qoliqoli owners prior to the introduction of new regulations. He underscored the significance of incorporating the perspectives of various stakeholders, especially considering the implications for food security and economic stability.
In defense of the ongoing efforts, Bainivalu noted that the entire Fisheries Act is under review, with input from the Solicitor General’s office forthcoming. The successful passage of the Fisheries Amendment Bill 2025 stands as a hopeful development for Fiji’s marine conservation efforts, aiming to protect vital resources and foster sustainable economic opportunities for future generations.
