The cassava-based coating has shown effectiveness in preserving fruits such as mangoes, notably reducing spoilage caused by fruit flies. This dual-function coating enhances the drying process through osmosis while also integrating clove oil, which repels fruit flies from laying eggs.
Professor Rohindra shared insights on the coating’s effectiveness, particularly for tropical produce that typically experiences limited shelf life and challenges in transport. The unique film-forming properties of cassava, a staple ingredient throughout the Pacific Islands, have been harnessed to create a material that is not only safe to consume but also sustainable and commercially viable.
