Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently unveiled the official logo for Drug-Free Sports Fiji, a significant move that underscores the government’s commitment to preserving the integrity of sports and tackling drug abuse. The launch event, held at the Novotel Lami Bay, was an opportunity for Rabuka to emphasize the importance of promoting clean sports and protecting athletes from the risks associated with prohibited substances.
During his remarks, Rabuka, who also serves as the Minister for Youth and Sports, noted that the initiation of Drug-Free Sports Fiji is particularly timely as the nation grapples with the increasing challenges posed by illicit drugs within its communities. He shared insights on various community initiatives designed to deter drug use among the youth, highlighting programs in Wailea Settlement that inspire young people to pursue positive endeavors.
The Prime Minister affirmed that sports play a critical role in instilling values such as discipline, integrity, and leadership among youth, stressing that fostering a drug-free sporting environment is vital to maintain these core principles.
Drug-Free Sports Fiji has been established under the Ministry of Youth and Sports as a statutory body tasked with enforcing the Anti-Doping Act of 2024. This newly-formed organization plans to collaborate with international partners, including the World Anti-Doping Agency and UNESCO, to ensure that Fijian athletes compete internationally with fairness and integrity.
Additionally, Drug-Free Sports Fiji will oversee the implementation of anti-doping testing and educational programs, which will reach from elite sports to grassroots levels, including schools, to promote awareness about clean sport among young athletes.
Rabuka encouraged all athletes, sporting federations, and communities to rally behind this initiative and uphold the values of fair play and honesty in sport, creating a brighter future not just for the athletes, but for the nation’s youth overall. The establishment of this body promises to strengthen efforts against drug use within sports, thereby fostering a healthier and more equitable sporting environment in Fiji.
