Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently introduced the official logo for Drug-Free Sports Fiji, marking a pivotal step in the government’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of sports and addressing the challenge of drug abuse within the country. The unveiling took place at the Novotel Lami Bay, where Rabuka took the opportunity to stress the significance of promoting clean sports and safeguarding athletes from the dangers associated with banned substances.
In his address, Rabuka, who also holds the position of Minister for Youth and Sports, highlighted the urgency of launching Drug-Free Sports Fiji, especially as the nation faces rising issues related to illicit drugs in local communities. He pointed to various community-driven initiatives aimed at curbing drug use among the youth, including inspiring programs in Wailea Settlement that encourage young individuals to engage in positive activities.
Rabuka underscored the essential role sports play in nurturing values like discipline, integrity, and leadership among young people, asserting that fostering a drug-free sporting culture is crucial to uphold these enduring principles.
This new initiative, established under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is tasked with enforcing the Anti-Doping Act of 2024. Drug-Free Sports Fiji plans to work closely with international organizations such as the World Anti-Doping Agency and UNESCO to ensure that Fijian athletes compete fairly on the global stage.
Moreover, Drug-Free Sports Fiji will handle the execution of anti-doping testing and educational initiatives, targeting both elite athletes and grassroots participants, including schools, to heighten awareness about the importance of clean sports among young competitors.
Rabuka urged all athletes, sporting federations, and community members to come together in support of this initiative, emphasizing the need to uphold values of fair play and integrity in sports.
