Fiji has officially unveiled its revised National Policy on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a crucial step aimed at protecting the rights of over 113,000 individuals facing functional challenges in the nation. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, emphasized that this policy represents a significant move towards fulfilling Fiji’s obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was ratified in 2017.
The newly launched policy highlights the critical role of individuals with disabilities in decision-making processes that impact their lives. Kiran famously stated, “Nothing for us, without us,” underscoring the commitment to an inclusive approach in Fiji’s future strategies. This change marks a shift away from viewing these individuals as passive beneficiaries, instead empowering them to assert their rights and engage actively in society.
Kiran explained that this policy acts as a comprehensive framework for government bodies and stakeholders aiming to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities through a human rights perspective. The Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation (FDPF) will significantly contribute by overseeing more than 60% of the policy’s 13 strategic areas, a decision that emerged from extensive collaboration with various stakeholders, including those directly affected, service providers, and community organizations.
The initiative also dovetails with ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility in schools and bolster social protection measures for individuals with disabilities. Kiran noted the importance of centralized data to track progress and ensure the effective implementation of programs for vulnerable populations. This includes increased funding for social protection initiatives, active participation of disability representatives on Ministry committees, and the creation of five dedicated budget lines focused on disability issues.
This policy is a groundbreaking advancement toward promoting inclusion, equity, and human rights for all Fijians.
