Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed Fiji’s unwavering dedication to youth empowerment, emphasizing numerous national initiatives during a speech at the United Nations marking the 30th anniversary of the UN World Programme of Action for Youth. Addressing global leaders, Rabuka outlined Fiji’s strategic efforts to enhance youth development, including revising the National Youth Policy and advancing the Pacific Youth Development Framework. These strategies target essential areas such as health, education, employment, inclusion, safety, and justice.
In response to the growing challenge of drug addiction among youths, Rabuka spotlighted the National Anti-doping Bill and the creation of the National Anti-Doping Organisation, known as “Drugs Free Sports Fiji.” These initiatives are designed to fight drug addiction and encourage a healthier future for Fijian youth.
Rabuka also addressed broader global issues affecting today’s youth, emphasizing the significance of Youth Training Centres to equip those outside mainstream educational systems with vital skills. He stressed the importance of sports, leadership exchanges, and digital services in preparing young people to face complex challenges.
Rabuka concluded his address by urging international leaders to exhibit the political will and provide the necessary resources to renew hope and prosperity for younger generations. This commitment coincides with Fiji’s goal of ensuring that youth are not only policy beneficiaries but also active participants in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future.
In related developments, Fiji has consistently demonstrated its dedication to youth development across the Pacific region, evidenced by previous initiatives discussed in recent South Pacific Youth meetings. The theme “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific” underscores the pivotal role youth play in the future of the region. The country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has led various projects, such as the establishment of the National Youth Council of Fiji and programs addressing reproductive health services, supported by partners like UNFPA and UNICEF.
Fiji’s comprehensive approach to youth empowerment reflects its belief in the potential of every young Fijian, striving to build a Pacific region where youths are equipped and empowered to achieve their full potential.
