Fiji has marked a significant advancement in its climate strategy, with the Environment and Climate Change Minister, Mosese Bulitavu, announcing the submission of the nation’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC3.0) in Parliament. This major step, recorded on November 6, 2025, represents Fiji’s most ambitious and scientifically grounded climate pledge to date.
NDC3.0 replaces the country’s previous commitments under the Paris Agreement and aligns with the Climate Change Act, further solidifying Fiji’s status as a leader in climate action among small island states that are disproportionately affected by climate change. One of the key goals of this new commitment is to achieve a significant reduction of 36 percent in emissions from the energy sector by the year 2035. This reduction will be pursued through domestic initiatives and international support, with 12 percent expected from Fiji’s own efforts and the remaining 24 percent contingent on external funding.
In a notable development, NDC3.0 introduces specific mitigation targets for agriculture and waste management. This includes the implementation of biogas systems for farmers aimed at decreasing emissions and innovative strategies to mitigate methane emissions from landfills and wastewater processes.
Fiji has also defined a national framework for loss and damage to better direct assistance to those hit hardest by climate impacts, such as coastal communities, agricultural sectors, and vulnerable households. Adaptation strategies are central to NDC3.0, focusing on safeguarding food security, infrastructure, water resources, public health, and marine ecosystems, all of which are under increasing pressure. The government is confident that these commitments will enhance resilience in the future, offering hope amid current challenges.
Minister Bulitavu pointed out that a Costed Implementation Plan is on the horizon, which will specify the necessary funding and climate finance to fulfill the obligations set forth in NDC3.0. He emphasized that this plan is more than just a policy statement; it reflects Fiji’s dedication to shielding its people and environment from the escalating climate crisis. This proactive approach showcases the nation’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future, underlining the belief that concerted climate action can lead to positive outcomes for both the country and the planet.
