The Fijian government is set to redefine its law and justice sector, as expressed by Acting Attorney General Siromi Turaga. The newly launched comprehensive Law and Justice Sector Reform Roadmap for 2025-2029 aims to enhance cooperation among various agencies that have historically functioned independently.

Turaga underscored the progress made within the Ministry of Justice, noting a restructured framework aimed at improving collaboration and access to justice. Important organizations including the Police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) have engaged in regular meetings to foster a unified justice approach.

In the past, the absence of a coordinated system meant these agencies were often isolated in their efforts. Turaga stressed the necessity of dismantling these barriers to create a more efficient justice system. Additionally, Legal Aid services have significantly expanded, reaching even the most remote areas of Fiji. Now, individuals facing charges can receive Legal Aid assistance within 48 hours of their request, greatly improving the promptness of the support available.

While progress is evident, Turaga also recognized ongoing challenges. A notable concern is that many individuals disengage from Legal Aid early, only to later understand the seriousness of their situations. There is also a critical need to strengthen civil legal assistance for vulnerable populations grappling with significant issues, such as potential eviction.

Looking ahead, the Ministry is contemplating the inclusion of part-time judicial officers and retired judges to mitigate court backlogs. In a forthcoming highlight for the nation, Fiji will host its first Law Ministers’ Meeting in two weeks, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s legal evolution.

These ongoing reforms represent a promising step towards establishing a more connected and responsive legal framework in Fiji, ultimately fostering trust and justice for all citizens.
