A comprehensive Road Master Plan is being developed to improve Fiji’s road infrastructure, prioritizing rural and remote communities. Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced that the initiative aims to outline necessary upgrades for national highways, major trunk routes, and rural roads, ensuring all areas are appropriately addressed.
The updated plan will also address critical infrastructure such as bridges and crossings, which have previously been underrepresented in existing frameworks. The Road Master Plan is intended to provide a strategic roadmap for road development, ensuring reliable access for all citizens and establishing a structured approach in place of the ad-hoc methods used in the past.
Acknowledging past challenges regarding funding and maintenance faced by the Fiji Roads Authority, Minister Tuisawau emphasized that this comprehensive plan would significantly enhance road conditions nationwide. He highlighted the importance of having a detailed framework that would streamline governmental processes and facilitate discussions around financing with development partners.
The government has already begun making progress by allocating approximately $338.8 million in the recent budget for essential construction and maintenance projects, with particular attention paid to rural and maritime roads that have long been in need of improvement. This commitment to upgrading Fiji’s transport infrastructure aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance essential services through collaboration with various stakeholders.
Minister Tuisawau stressed that the successful implementation of the Road Master Plan will depend on strong coordination among all involved parties. This indicates the government’s dedication to prioritizing infrastructure improvements, ensuring sustainable roadway access for rural communities.
