Fiji has officially unveiled a national framework aimed at ensuring the sustainable use and protection of its ocean resources for the next decade. The Fiji Blue Economy Framework 2025–2035, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Blue Prosperity Fiji, sets a clear course for the country’s ocean-based development that integrates environmental stewardship with economic growth.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu emphasized Fiji’s duty to safeguard its natural resources for future generations. He highlighted the intrinsic value of the land and its living beings, describing them as a precious gift that requires wise stewardship. The Framework is designed to foster the growth of the ocean economy while simultaneously protecting marine ecosystems, promising long-lasting benefits for local communities.
This initiative follows the Cabinet’s approval of the Framework, which will serve as a national blueprint for sustainable and inclusive economic development centered on ocean resources. Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Sivendra Michael clarified that while the Framework is not an action or implementation plan, it provides essential guiding principles for Blue Economy development. It establishes a comprehensive policy direction across various sectors, allowing ministries and organizations to tailor their actions accordingly to meet their specific mandates.
Developed through extensive consultations with stakeholders, the framework reflects contributions from communities, government entities, civil society, and the private sector. It aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan and National Ocean Policy, reinforcing the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Key objectives include the sustainable management of 100% of Fiji’s ocean space and the protection of at least 30% of these marine areas by 2030. The framework places a strong emphasis on marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, climate-resilient tourism, renewable ocean energy, and conservation-led enterprises. This proactive approach not only signifies Fiji’s commitment to environmental sustainability but also highlights a hopeful vision for a balanced and thriving ocean economy.
