Fiji has unveiled a new toll-free helpline—1548—alongside the launch of the Miss Fiji Pageant Online Safety Song as part of an ambitious national movement aimed at combating cyberbullying, online scams, and digital abuse. The initiative, presented by Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua, emphasizes a united stand to enhance the safety of digital spaces across the country.
Naivalurua highlighted the significance of the online world, describing it as essential rather than optional. He stated that the helpline represents “a digital lifeline,” offering immediate, confidential support for those in need, connecting individuals to help, counseling, and justice at no cost.
Filipe Batiwale, the Online Safety Commissioner, described this campaign as a new frontline in the battle against harm online. He emphasized the importance of awareness as the first line of defense, sharing that the narratives behind the reports of online abuse reflect real pain in communities. The collaboration with the Miss Fiji Pageant serves to amplify messages of safety and empowers pageant contestants to act as ambassadors for online well-being.
Ana Tuiketei, the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant Board Director, reflected on the importance of addressing online safety, stressing that “one in three teenagers have shared explicit photos” and that over 60 percent of female victims feel powerless due to online abuse. She urged young people to think carefully before posting and to use social media as a platform for positivity, stating that online safety is as crucial as safety in physical spaces.
The partnership aims to inspire responsible digital behavior through advocacy and music, with Tuiketei expressing hope that these efforts will foster a more respectful online community. The introduction of toll-free helpline 1548 is part of a broader strategy to encourage Fijians to report digital abuse and seek help.
Minister Naivalurua characterized this initiative as a strong sign of leadership and action in confronting the digital challenges faced by the nation.
