Fiji Unveils $8.7B Water Strategy to Climate-Proof the Nation by 2050

Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has announced significant advancements made by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) under its “Building for Growth and Resilience” program over the past three years. Tuisawau emphasized the integration of climate-smart strategies into planning, operations, and service delivery, which is crucial for the country’s adaptation to climate change.

A key milestone reached this year is the introduction of the $8.7 billion Water Sector Strategy 2050, aimed at directing Fiji’s water and wastewater services over the next three decades. The strategy aligns with the National Development Plan and promotes inclusive, climate-resilient development, addressing issues like climate vulnerability and aging infrastructure while advocating for sustainable practices.

“This strategic plan tackles climate challenges, promotes the principles of a circular economy, and ensures resilience in service delivery,” stated Tuisawau. He also assured that the funding for 2025–2026 programs is secured and will continue irrespective of the governing party.

Opposition Member Virendra Lal highlighted that the ministry’s achievements rely on the continuation of long-term projects. He noted the significance of the recently commissioned Viria Water Project, which adds 40 million liters per day to the water supply. While the current administration is rightly celebrating this achievement, Lal pointed out that the groundwork laid by the previous government was instrumental in this success.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Public Works remains committed to further developing water and infrastructure projects in areas needing improvement. The proactive measures reinstated through significant investments show a promising outlook for Fiji’s water supply, improving residents’ quality of life and contributing positively to the nation’s sustainable development objectives.

With ongoing commitments to enhance water infrastructure and address existing challenges, there is a renewed sense of hope among communities for a more stable and reliable water supply in the future.
