Concerns regarding the transparency of international climate funding were raised by opposition member Premila Kumar, who sought clarity on the significant $62 million investment package for Fiji, aimed at promoting nature-based solutions and enhancing community resilience. Kumar questioned Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, on how the funding would be allocated.
Bulitavu clarified that the investment is divided evenly into grants and concessional loans. Specifically, $31 million will be allocated as a grant, while another $31 million will be provided as a loan at a low interest rate of 1% over a period of 40 years. He also mentioned the establishment of a system to facilitate access to the funds for farmers and community groups, thereby supporting sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and coastal restoration projects.
This funding initiative aligns well with the broader context of Fiji’s recent advancements in climate finance. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) previously endorsed Fiji’s Nature, People, and Climate (NPC) plan, which also received around $27 million aimed at enhancing climate resilience throughout various sectors critical to Fiji’s economy, including tourism, agriculture, and fisheries. With a significant portion of Fiji’s GDP and employment reliant on these sectors, the NPC plan underscores the importance of biodiversity conservation and the protection of vulnerable communities.
