Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, announced substantial progress achieved by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) through its “Building for Growth and Resilience” program over the last three years. Tuisawau highlighted the incorporation of climate-smart approaches into various aspects of planning, operations, and service delivery, underlining their importance in the nation’s efforts to adapt to climate change impacts.
A significant milestone this year is the launch of the $8.7 billion Water Sector Strategy 2050, designed to guide Fiji’s water and wastewater services over the next thirty years. This strategy is in accordance with the National Development Plan and focuses on fostering inclusive, climate-resilient development by tackling issues like climate vulnerability and aging infrastructure, while promoting sustainability.
“This strategic plan addresses climate-related challenges, encourages the principles of a circular economy, and ensures resilience in service delivery,” Tuisawau noted. He also reassured stakeholders that funding for the 2025–2026 programs is secure and will remain unaffected by changes in the governing party.
However, opposition member Virendra Lal pointed out that the ministry’s successes hinge on the continuity of long-term projects. He emphasized the importance of the newly launched Viria Water Project, which adds an impressive 40 million liters per day to the water supply. While celebrating this achievement, Lal acknowledged that the foundations laid by previous administrations were key to this accomplishment.
Looking to the future, the Ministry of Public Works is dedicated to further advancing water and infrastructure projects in areas requiring enhancement. The significant investments made reflect a hopeful perspective for Fiji’s water supply, enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting the nation’s sustainable development goals.
As the commitment to fortify water infrastructure continues, communities express optimism about achieving a more stable and reliable water supply moving forward.
