Fiji has introduced a comprehensive national framework focused on the sustainable utilization and protection of its ocean resources, charting a course for the next decade. The Fiji Blue Economy Framework 2025–2035, launched in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Blue Prosperity Fiji, aims to integrate environmental stewardship with economic development, emphasizing the country’s commitment to sound ocean-based practices.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu underscored Fiji’s responsibility to protect its natural resources for future generations. He stressed the vital importance of land and its ecosystems, describing them as invaluable gifts that demand thoughtful management. This Framework strives to bolster the ocean economy while concurrently safeguarding marine ecosystems, promising enduring advantages for local communities.
The Framework has received backing from the Cabinet and is set to serve as a national guideline for sustainable and inclusive economic growth focused on ocean utilization. Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, explained that while the Framework does not constitute a specific action or implementation plan, it provides crucial guiding principles for the development of the Blue Economy. It outlines a broad policy direction across diverse sectors, enabling ministries and organizations to customize their actions in line with their specific mandates.
Crafted through extensive consultations with various stakeholders, the framework incorporates insights from local communities, government bodies, civil society, and the private sector. It aligns with both Fiji’s National Development Plan and National Ocean Policy, thus reinforcing the country’s obligations under the Paris Agreement.
Among its primary goals are the sustainable management of 100% of Fiji’s ocean territory and the protection of at least 30% of its marine areas by the year 2030. The framework emphasizes marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, climate-resilient tourism, renewable ocean energy, and conservation-led enterprises. This proactive strategy not only showcases Fiji’s dedication to environmental sustainability but also embodies a hopeful vision for a balanced and prosperous ocean economy that benefits all.
