The Fijian government is embarking on a transformative journey to overhaul its law and justice sector, as proclaimed by Acting Attorney General Siromi Turaga. The introduction of a comprehensive Law and Justice Sector Reform Roadmap for 2025-2029 aims to foster better coordination amongst various agencies, which have historically operated in isolation.

Turaga highlighted significant progress within the Ministry of Justice, emphasizing the newly structured framework that prioritizes collaboration and enhanced access to justice. Key agencies, including the Police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), have begun regular meetings to ensure a unified approach to justice.

Previously, the lack of a cohesive system resulted in these agencies working in silos. Turaga noted the importance of breaking down these barriers to facilitate a more effective justice system. Furthermore, Legal Aid services have seen notable expansion, making assistance accessible even in remote areas of Fiji. Individuals charged with offenses can now receive Legal Aid within 48 hours of their request, enhancing the timeliness of support.

Despite these advancements, Turaga acknowledged some persistent challenges. A notable issue is that many individuals disengage from Legal Aid early in the process and later come to terms with the gravity of their situations. There is also a pressing need to address gaps in civil legal assistance, particularly for vulnerable populations facing significant issues such as potential eviction.

Looking to the future, the Ministry is considering the introduction of part-time judicial officers and retired judges to help alleviate court backlogs. In a significant development, Fiji is set to host its inaugural Law Ministers’ Meeting in two weeks, marking an important milestone in the nation’s legal landscape.

The ongoing reforms signal a hopeful shift towards a more interconnected and responsive legal system in Fiji, which is essential for fostering trust and ensuring justice for all citizens.
