Fiji Unveils $14M Marine and Manufacturing Career Center

FIJI Water and Neptune Pacific have made a landmark commitment to enhancing Fiji’s workforce by unveiling a $14 million investment aimed at establishing a cutting-edge career center focused on marine and manufacturing training at the Fiji National University (FNU) Laucala campus. The initiative was launched in an official ceremony led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, and Craig Cooper, Executive Vice President of The Wonderful Company.

The newly envisioned career center aims to tackle the growing skill shortages in Fiji’s industrial sectors, notably in maritime operations and manufacturing. By offering hands-on training, the center will equip students with essential industrial skills and accredited certifications, significantly boosting their employability and readiness for careers in these crucial fields. Over the next decade, the center is projected to support more than 400 students in closing the existing skills gap that has been a challenge for local businesses.

This initiative is bolstered by the support of Stewart and Lynda Resnick, co-owners of The Wonderful Company, who have made substantial investments in global education, health, and sustainability initiatives. Their involvement highlights a commitment not only to business interests but also to the growth and development of the communities they serve.

Professor Nabobo-Baba remarked that this investment marks “a pivotal step toward a brighter future for Fiji,” emphasizing the beneficial effects that this venture will have on the local economy. The newly appointed director of the Career Centre, Carol Watkins, will be responsible for developing programs that align the workforce with both local and international industry requirements.

This investment mirrors previous efforts by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited to enhance workforce skills in Fiji, including the intention to adapt successful training models from California. By focusing on educational and vocational training, these initiatives present an optimistic outlook for the future, bridging the gap between education and employment while fostering economic growth within the country.
