Representatives from 32 sporting organizations in Fiji convened in Lami for the National Sporting Organisations Conference, marking it as the most significant assembly of sports entities in the nation. The event took place at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay, with this year’s focus on understanding high performance in the context of Fiji’s sports.
Peter Mazey, executive chairman of the Fiji National Sports Commission, emphasized the importance of the conference, which provided insights into enhancing the performance levels of Fiji’s athletes. “We are learning more about what high performance means to Fiji and to us,” Mazey stated. He noted that while Fiji has already celebrated numerous Olympic and world championship successes, there remains considerable room for improvement.
Mazey highlighted the necessity of establishing a robust support framework to adequately fund and train athletes, which is vital for maximizing their potential. “We have to pay them so they can be totally dedicated to be the top of their field,” he said, underscoring the need for comprehensive support including nutrition, and sports psychology to enhance athletic performance.
The conference also aligned with broader aspirations for the Pacific region, aiming for significant achievements at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia. Mazey reinforced the optimism surrounding this goal, stating, “So by starting now, we can do it.” The discussions held during the conference are expected to lay the groundwork for improved performance and greater national pride in sports as Fiji prepares for future competitions.
