Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya has pledged bipartisan cooperation in the national effort against drug abuse in Fiji. In response to a ministerial statement from Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalarua, Koya emphasized the need to empower the Counter-Narcotics Bureau, which he believes is essential for effectively combating drug issues in the country. He underscored that the Bureau should operate independently, without fear or favoritism, to deal with what he referred to as a “scourge” affecting Fijian society.
Koya acknowledged the serious nature of Fiji’s drug crisis but pointed out the availability of support from international partners, including the United Nations, which can play a vital role in addressing this pressing issue. He highlighted the necessity of strengthening laws to enable judges and magistrates to impose tougher sentences that will act as a deterrent for potential offenders.
He stated, “One of the most important tools that any judge or magistrate will have will be the laws that we put in place… ensure that the laws are perfect so we can rid this scourge from our society.” This legal empowerment is crucial for ensuring that those seeking to engage in drug-related activities are sent a clear message about the consequences they will face.
In addition to enforcement and law reform, Koya raised concerns regarding aftercare and rehabilitation, noting that institutions like St. Giles Hospital are burdened by the rising number of drug-related cases and lack sufficient capacity to address these challenges adequately. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that includes not only action against drug trafficking but also support for individuals affected by substance abuse.
Koya also viewed the recent arrests of officers within the Counter-Narcotics Bureau as a positive sign, indicating that accountability measures are functioning within the system.
