The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific is set to assist Fiji in improving its national arms control measures following the recent Cabinet approval for a new partnership. This collaboration was officially announced yesterday and aims to enhance the country’s capability in overseeing arms-related activities.
The initiative, titled “Enhancing Fiji’s Arms Control System and Supporting Melanesian Arms Trade Treaty Implementation,” will focus on fostering inter-agency cooperation while upgrading Fiji’s current arms control framework. With a budget of $199,800 funded by the Arms Trade Treaty Voluntary Trust Fund, the project is poised to promote greater engagement among Melanesian nations in the Arms Trade Treaty, ultimately supporting regional stability and the adherence to responsible arms transfer standards.
Additionally, this partnership will aid Fiji in meeting its international obligations, paving the way for more effective monitoring and regulation of arms movements within the nation. This initiative signifies a pivotal advancement in promoting regional security and responsible governance concerning arms control not only in Fiji but also across the broader Melanesian region. The commitment to international cooperation underscores the importance of proactive measures in ensuring peace and stability.
