The Fiji men’s and women’s U23 basketball teams have wrapped up their journeys in the FIBA World Cup, gaining essential exposure on the international stage. Despite encountering tough competition and not achieving favorable outcomes, the experience is crucial for the development of local talent in Fiji.

The women’s team, consisting of players Moana Liebregts, Camari Ravai, Ranadi Koroi, and Estelle Kainamoli, faced formidable opponents and suffered defeats against teams from Czechia, New Zealand, Uganda, and the Netherlands. These matches served as a learning opportunity to strengthen their skills and strategies for future tournaments.

On the men’s side, the team—comprising Tevia Vocea, Ratu Tuivabuavou, Isaac Sewabu, and Keenan Hughes—also faced challenging matches, with losses against Latvia, the USA, China, and Qatar. Despite these setbacks, the players showcased determination, particularly in their narrow loss to Qatar.

Previously, both the men’s and women’s teams from Fiji have demonstrated promise in international tournaments, earning their place in the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup through impressive performances such as winning the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League – Oceania in Palau. This achievement not only qualified them for the World Cup but also fueled their ambitions for future international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games.

The exposure and experience gained from competing against high-level international teams are invaluable for the growth and development of basketball in Fiji. With continued dedication and support, there is optimism that Fijian basketball teams will achieve greater success on the global stage and bring recognition to their nation. The journey of these teams highlights a significant step towards cultivating sports excellence within Fiji, paving the way for more achievements in the future.
