The Basketball Fiji boys’ and girls’ teams recently celebrated meaningful accomplishments during the FIBA U17 Oceania Cup held in Samoa over the weekend. Interim chief of operations William Peters expressed pride in both teams’ performances, particularly highlighting the boys’ team, which secured fifth place with an impressive 89-81 victory over the Cook Islands. Meanwhile, the girls’ team triumphed with a decisive win against Guam, finishing at 75-51.

Peters commended the teams for their hard work and commitment, indicating that they successfully met their objectives despite not reaching the finals. “The team played their best in the competition—we did set our goals and achieved them. Although we didn’t get the win in the final, the teams showed remarkable determination,” he stated.

This tournament was especially significant as it marked the U17 teams’ debut in the competition, and Peters underlined the importance of the experience gained, which will undoubtedly benefit their future participation in the sport. “This was the first time we took a U17 team to compete, so it was a great exposure for them, and it’s all about doing better in the years to come,” he added.

Looking toward the future, Peters pointed out that this event served as a critical step leading up to the 2025 championships. He also reflected on the successful year Basketball Fiji has enjoyed, with participation in numerous overseas and secondary school competitions, expressing optimism for an even greater showing in 2026.

Peters expressed gratitude to the sponsors and partners, such as the Fiji National Sports Commission, Vodafone Fiji, and the Fiji Sports Council, for their support, which has been instrumental in the success of the teams. He also extended heartfelt thanks to the parents and families of the U17 players, recognizing their essential role in the athletes’ journeys.

This experience not only fosters hope for future success in basketball for Fiji but also encourages growth and determination among the young athletes. It helps them cultivate resilience and expertise in the sport, paving the way for promising prospects.
