The Fiji National University (FNU) is making commendable progress in expanding educational opportunities for vocational students. Recently, FNU held the inaugural National Qualification Certificate Level 3 Graduation Ceremony in Nadi, where 79 graduates in fields such as carpentry, automotive engineering, agriculture, welding, and baking and patisserie were celebrated. The ceremony took place at Swami Vivekananda College, featuring graduates from the Penang Sangam Vocational Centre and Tavua College, with many now ready to advance to Certificate Level 4 programs.
Among the distinguished graduates, 18-year-old Marvin Naicker from Penang Sangam stood out as the first recipient of an offer to pursue a Certificate 4 in Carpentry. His determination to excel in the trade has been significantly influenced by his uncle, underscoring the personal aspirations that drive many vocational students.
The event’s chief guest, Isoa Tauribau, the Director of Technical Vocational Education and Training, expressed pride in the achievements of the graduates, urging them to view their vocational skills as valuable instruments for seizing future career opportunities. This graduation ceremony reflects the national push to reinforce Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a viable path towards employment and further educational advancement.
The buzz surrounding vocational education is evident, highlighted by recent reports stating that over 69,000 students have graduated from FNU’s TVET programs since 2019. Dr. Isimeli Tagicakiverata, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of TVET, emphasized FNU’s position as the premier technical education institution in Fiji and the South Pacific, showcasing its commitment to producing skilled graduates equipped to meet both local and global workforce needs.
This celebration of vocational education not only empowers individuals but also plays a crucial role in Fiji’s socioeconomic development. As efforts to broaden vocational training opportunities continue, the outlook for Fiji’s youth is optimistic. They are increasingly positioning themselves for success in an evolving job market. The positive narrative surrounding these educational developments illustrates a shared commitment to fostering a more skilled and resilient workforce, poised to drive innovation and growth across the nation.
