The Fiji National University (FNU) is taking significant strides to enhance educational opportunities for vocational students. Recently, a dedicated team from FNU attended the inaugural National Qualification Certificate Level 3 Graduation Ceremony in Nadi, celebrating the achievements of 79 graduates in various fields, including carpentry, automotive engineering, agriculture, welding, and baking and patisserie. The event took place at Swami Vivekananda College and featured graduates from both Penang Sangam Vocational Centre and Tavua College, many of whom are now eligible to advance to Certificate Level 4 programs.
Among the highlights, 18-year-old Marvin Naicker from Penang Sangam earned a unique distinction as he was the first individual to receive an offer to pursue a Certificate 4 in Carpentry. Marvin’s aspiration to succeed in the trade was bolstered by the inspiration of his uncle, showcasing the personal motivations that often drive vocational students.
Chief Guest Isoa Tauribau, the Director of Technical Vocational Education and Training, expressed pride in the graduates, encouraging them to embrace their vocational skills as keys to unlock numerous opportunities in their future careers. This ceremony aligns with national initiatives aimed at reinforcing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a reliable pathway to gainful employment and higher educational pursuits.
The momentum surrounding vocational education is palpable, as evidenced by recent reports indicating that more than 69,000 students have graduated from FNU’s TVET programs since 2019. Dr. Isimeli Tagicakiverata, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of TVET, highlighted FNU’s role as the leading technical education institution in Fiji and the South Pacific, emphasizing its commitment to producing competent graduates ready to meet both local and global labor market demands.
The celebration of vocational education not only empowers individuals but also contributes significantly to Fiji’s socioeconomic development. With ongoing efforts to expand vocational training opportunities, the future looks bright for Fiji’s youth as they position themselves for success in the evolving job market. The hopeful narrative surrounding these educational advancements illustrates a collective aspiration for a more skilled and resilient workforce, capable of driving innovation and growth throughout the nation.
