Fiji is turning to Singapore’s advanced waste management system to address escalating environmental and public health challenges. Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, emphasized that this initiative is crucial for adopting more effective and sustainable waste management practices in Fiji.
The visiting delegation is particularly focused on integrated solid waste management and circular economy strategies. On the first day of their visit, they were introduced to Singapore’s comprehensive approach to waste management, which is overseen by the National Environment Agency. This agency is responsible for the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste, reinforced by stringent policies, operational standards, and public engagement initiatives.
Additionally, industry sessions included insights from Circular Unite, a Singapore start-up that presented innovative digital tools and artificial intelligence solutions designed to enhance waste management processes. These insights will be instrumental in guiding Fiji’s reforms aimed at supporting national sustainable development goals.
By learning from Singapore’s success in waste management, Fiji hopes to improve its own systems, thereby enhancing environmental protection and public health outcomes. This collaboration reflects a positive step towards more sustainable practices that could significantly benefit Fiji’s future.
