Fiji’s Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has announced promising developments in providing water access through the innovative use of Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) Survey technology. This initiative aims to uncover underground water sources in remote and underserved areas, ensuring that more villages and settlements benefit from clean and reliable water supply. During a recent meeting with the Bose ni Yasana o Ba, Vosarogo reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling water security issues for communities that are not linked to the Fiji Water Authority’s supply network.
The minister pointed out that the implementation of AEM technology represents a significant advancement over conventional water mapping methods, which are often slow and labor-intensive. By utilizing this cutting-edge approach, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources expects to create numerous drilling targets, thereby enhancing groundwater access across the nation. The ministry currently boasts an 80% success rate in drilling operations, and with the integration of these new techniques, it aims to elevate that rate to 90%.
The innovative survey commenced last month, supported by Geoscience Australia, and is currently focusing on priority areas in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which have faced challenges in water accessibility. Key regions targeted by the survey include the Sigatoka Valley, Cuvu, Malomalo, as well as various locations in Vanua Levu. By December 2025, the initiative is anticipated to lead to substantial improvements in water delivery systems.
Additionally, Vosarogo reassured the public of the government’s commitment to actively listen to community needs and pursue comprehensive reforms to protect land and natural resources. He emphasized, “This Government is here for the people. We hear your voices, your challenges, and your aspirations,” highlighting a dedication to fostering better living conditions for future generations.
This ambitious project reflects Fiji’s commitment to sustainability and effective resource management, showcasing the government’s determination to enhance health outcomes and economic opportunities for its citizens. By harnessing advanced technology and building international partnerships, this initiative heralds a hopeful future in which access to safe drinking water transforms from a privilege into a universal right for every Fijian, ultimately contributing to community well-being and resilience throughout the nation.
