Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, has been updated by the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) on their progress since its inception in December 2024. Prasad met with Commission Chairperson Marcus Brand and Commissioners Rajendra Dass and Sekove Naqiolevu, who briefed him on their engagement efforts, which include dialogues with survivors, civil society, youth, religious leaders, and the media.
The FTRC was established to provide a platform for truth-telling regarding Fiji’s coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, with the goal of fostering healing, closure, and national reconciliation. Prasad praised the Commission for ensuring that community voices are integral to its mission and acknowledged its vital role in addressing racial and social divisions, while also strengthening democratic governance.
The Fijian government has committed $1.5 million in the 2025–2026 National Budget to support the Commission’s efforts. They have reiterated their full support for the FTRC’s initiatives and pledged to promote peace, unity, and sustainable democratic development in Fiji.
This development comes as a continuation of the government’s long-term goals, aligning with past actions and objectives aimed at addressing historical injustices and fostering reconciliation. Notably, the Commission is backed by legislation empowering it to summon involved parties and conduct thorough investigations, bolstering its credibility and scope.

Moreover, community consultations have revealed generational differences in perspectives, with older generations emphasizing the need for historical healing and younger individuals focusing on contemporary issues like healthcare.
