The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) has clarified that its mission is centered on acknowledging all individuals who have experienced Fiji’s political upheavals as survivors rather than designating anyone as a perpetrator or victim. Commissioner Sekove Naqiolevu emphasized that the commission prioritizes listening, understanding, and reconciliation, indicating that some individuals who may have engaged in past violence are also considered survivors of the overarching trauma affecting Fiji.
Naqiolevu’s remarks emerged following a survivor’s suggestion during a recent Truth Hearing, proposing that key figures, including those involved in past coups, should engage in face-to-face public hearings with survivors. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his support for the FTRC’s process, stating that he is willing to comply with any requests made by the commission regarding participation.
This approach aligns with the broader goals of the FTRC, which aims to create a safe and voluntary environment for truth-telling without the fear of legal repercussions. Chairperson Dr. Marcus Brand has previously reiterated that no legal proceedings will stem from the commission’s discussions, thereby fostering a sense of security for participants.
The mission of the FTRC embodies a commitment to social cohesion, promoting healing through open dialogue. It empowers individuals to share their stories and experiences, contributing to a narrative that acknowledges diverse perspectives surrounding Fiji’s history. The commission’s framework emphasizes the psychosocial well-being of all parties involved, advocating for community resilience and understanding rather than punitive actions.
With the commitment of leaders and various community stakeholders, this initiative represents a hopeful pathway toward national unity. By focusing on collective healing rather than blame, Fiji can build a stronger foundation for a peaceful future, one that acknowledges shared vulnerabilities and strives for reconciliation among all its citizens.
