Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission Sees Surge in Public Participation

The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission is experiencing a notable rise in public participation as more citizens step forward to share their personal narratives and contribute to the country’s healing journey. Acting Chairperson Commissioner Sekove Naqiolevu reported that since May, the Commission has gathered 32 formal submissions and held 54 statement-taking sessions, with a remarkable 42 statements recorded just in November.

Naqiolevu highlighted the Commission’s comprehensive efforts, which included a series of hearings covering various perspectives. This has comprised 11 survivor hearings, one high-level witness session, two family hearings, and an institutional expert witness hearing. Despite this progress, he acknowledged that the Commission has yet to hear from ethnic minority groups and marginalized communities, including the LGBT community and individuals with disabilities.

Commissioner Rachna Nath emphasized the sensitivity surrounding the disclosure process, noting that survivors often seek to share their stories only when they feel adequately prepared. She articulated the emotional challenge of revisiting painful memories, stating, “It’s not easy to revisit parts that are very deep and varied and having to lift the veil of secrecy and talk about some of the most darkest parts of our history.” As the Commission conducts its work, they aim for increased trust and safety, collaborating with partners to facilitate this essential dialogue.

Moving forward, the Commission is committed to expanding its outreach in areas that need more engagement, striving to foster relationships of trust with survivors, and encouraging broader participation from the Fijian community in the restorative process. The FTRC is dedicated to guiding the nation towards healing, reconciliation, and enhanced social cohesion, showcasing the ongoing commitment to create a more united Fiji.
