The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) has reaffirmed its mission to recognize all individuals affected by Fiji’s political turmoil as survivors, rather than labeling anyone as a perpetrator or victim. Commissioner Sekove Naqiolevu highlighted the commission’s focus on listening, understanding, and fostering reconciliation, suggesting that even those who may have participated in past violence are acknowledged as survivors of the broader trauma that has impacted the nation.
Naqiolevu’s comments followed a survivor’s recommendation during a recent Truth Hearing, which suggested that prominent figures, including those tied to earlier coup events, should openly engage in dialogue with survivors. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his support for the FTRC’s process, expressing readiness to comply with any participation requests from the commission.
This approach reflects the FTRC’s overarching goals of cultivating a safe and voluntary space for truth-telling, free from fears of legal consequences. Chairperson Dr. Marcus Brand has stressed that discussions held during the commission will not lead to legal actions, thus promoting a secure environment for all participants.
