Government and major corporate entities are encouraged to adopt flexible working hours and remote work options to help mitigate the severe traffic congestion occurring nationwide. This pertinent issue was emphasized during a recent State of Economy breakfast event at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Ariff Ali addressed a delegate’s concerns and revealed that the central bank has already implemented flexible hours for its employees, allowing them to start their workday earlier and leave in the afternoon. In discussions with staff, Ali found that many employees spend over two hours commuting daily, resulting in a loss of three to four hours in transit time.
Ali remarked, “These are young individuals with families, and as an economist, I consider this a substantial waste of resources when productivity could be significantly increased.” He urged both the government and large corporations to seriously consider these flexible work arrangements, as current commuting patterns affect a significant portion of the workforce.
In addition to flexible working arrangements, Ali suggested the decentralization of government offices by distributing them between areas such as Nasinu and Nakasi. This, he believes, could help reduce congestion in the capital, Suva. He stressed the importance of shared responsibility in addressing the traffic issue.
Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel added to this dialogue by acknowledging the government’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion throughout the nation. He shared insights about upcoming infrastructure developments, including traffic diversions and the construction of a new bridge in Labasa. Immanuel also mentioned that proposals for the Suva-Nausori corridor are under review.
The impetus towards flexible work arrangements and advancements in infrastructure reflects a proactive strategy aimed at enhancing productivity and the overall quality of life for employees. As awareness of these traffic challenges increases, there is optimism about the implementation of effective solutions that will not only benefit the workforce but also the broader community.
