A significant upgrade to the Labasa–Savusavu cross-island link road is currently underway as authorities aim to address one of Fiji’s most critical road safety issues. Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka announced that a design and supervision contract was awarded in May, which marks the beginning of an 11-month design phase prior to the release of construction tenders.

The ambitious project will focus on creating safer road alignments and features such as scenic lookouts, rest stops, navigational signage, and improvements to the roadway leading to the Waisali Rainforest Reserve. Minister Gavoka highlighted the pressing need for the upgrade, noting the alarming increase in accidents along the northern corridor.

“There are simply too many unnecessary accidents and fatalities on the Labasa–Savusavu roads,” Gavoka stated. He expressed hope that this initiative would significantly reduce, if not eliminate, such incidents. “This is not just a problem here in the North but across Fiji, and it must be addressed,” he stressed.

In addition to enhancing safety, the improved route is expected to enrich the experience for visitors and bolster the resilience of the northern region’s transport infrastructure. The project reflects a broader commitment to improving road safety and infrastructure throughout Fiji, ultimately fostering a safer environment for both residents and tourists.
