The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a firm warning to Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators and drivers, taking a strong stance against illicit drug use within the industry. This declaration of zero tolerance follows concerns expressed by the Lautoka Zone Taxi Association regarding the growing number of drivers turning to drugs due to long working hours and mounting financial pressures.
LTA Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, stressed that while these challenges may exist, they do not justify illegal activities that compromise the safety of passengers and other road users. He reiterated that offenders could face serious repercussions such as suspension or cancellation of their licenses and permits.
Recent data shows that between January and October 2025, the LTA initiated 559 showcause proceedings, with 15 of these linked to PSV drivers—leading to 11 suspensions and four cancellations. With impending permit renewals due on November 27, Rokosawa reminded permit holders that their compliance history, particularly regarding drug-related offenses, will be taken into account.
In a bid to combat this pressing issue, the LTA is finalizing regulations for random drug testing, which will be enforced in partnership with the Fiji Police Force. This initiative is designed to enhance road safety by ensuring that drivers are not under the influence of drugs while operating vehicles.
Rokosawa expressed disappointment at the Lautoka Zone Taxi Association’s inadequate response in reporting concerns directly to the authorities. He called on all stakeholders to utilize official channels to assist in identifying offenders, reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding public transport.
This proactive approach to addressing drug use in Fiji’s transport sector reflects the authorities’ commitment to fostering a safer environment for both drivers and passengers. The emphasis on accountability and cooperation signals a hopeful trajectory towards improved safety standards and public confidence in the transportation system. The collaborative efforts by the LTA and the police to implement effective drug testing measures herald a promising turn in managing and mitigating drug-related issues within the industry.
